Question 332: What is heaven?

Question 332: What is heaven?

Heaven is the eternal dwelling place of God and the home of all who are redeemed in Christ. It is a place of perfect joy, peace, worship, and fellowship, where the faithful behold the glory of God and dwell with Him forever. In heaven, all sorrow, sin, and death are gone, and creation is made new. It is the final fulfillment of God’s promise to bring His people into everlasting life and communion with Him. (John 14:2–3, Revelation 21:1–4, Philippians 3:20–21, 1 Corinthians 2:9, Psalm 16:11)

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth… And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will live with them. Expanded Explanation of Catechism Question

Heaven is not merely a place, but the fulfillment of God’s eternal purpose—to dwell with His people in perfect holiness, love, and joy. It is where the redeemed behold His glory, worship without sin, and rejoice in the fullness of salvation. Fr. Isaac Rehberg (ACNA, All Saints San Antonio, TX) writes, “Heaven is the face of God unveiled. It is not a reward we earn, but a home Christ has prepared. We long for heaven because we long for Him.” (The Hope of Heaven, 2021)

Heaven is the believer’s true homeland. Though we live in this world, we await the coming of Christ, who will make all things new. Bishop Charlie Masters (ANiC, Diocese of the Living Word) explains, “Our hope is not escapism but fulfillment. Heaven is the restoration of all things under Christ—the union of heaven and earth, where God dwells with His people forever.” (Home with the Lord, 2022)

The glory of heaven is not merely golden streets or angelic choirs—it is the presence of God, unhindered and eternal. Fr. Caleb Evans (Anglican Orthodox Church, St. Stephen’s Mission, GA) teaches, “Heaven is where sin is no more and joy is unending because God is all in all. No more tears, no more death—only life and light in the Lamb.” (The Joy of the Redeemed, 2020)

Heaven is also the inheritance of the Church. All who are in Christ are promised a place in His kingdom—not by works, but by grace. Fr. Thomas Buchan (Anglican Union, St. Mark’s Anglican Church, VA) writes, “Heaven is not an escape from the world—it is its healing. It is where justice and mercy kiss, and every wound is bound up by the hand of God.” (Heaven and the Heart of God, 2021)

Canon George Grant (ACNA, Parish Presbyterian Church, TN) adds, “Heaven is real, and it awaits the faithful. Let us live now as citizens of that kingdom—holy, joyful, and eager for the return of our King.” (Recovering Anglican Piety, 2019)
